Dirty Angus comments on Jamie Kennedy and his comedy

May 19th, 2010

I have a new respect for Jamie Kennedy. I have always liked his shows. As a matter of fact, his The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (JKX) show, while not an original concept (Candid Camera etc), was well executed by his team and some of the setups were both creative and really worth seeing. His movie, Malibu’s Most Wanted, in my opinion was very worth watching. Aye have seen it at least five times and the laser is going to burn a hole in my DVD. I could see why some critics didn’t like it – it wasn’t made for them. But it was made for me. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen some gangsta thugs bust out a spear gun and a musket. And I’m now calling my friend B-Rad and the beach Malibizzle. Go check it out.

But what prompet me to write this is that I just saw Heckler, his 2007 documentary on heckling in comedy. Long have I known that this goes on. Guilty of heckling generally am I not. Guilty of criticizing I am. But I don’t do it to be mean, I do it to help people make decisions on what to spend their time doing. For example, I strongly recommend spending your time surfing for high quality internet porn. I recommend not spending your time locating a new vendor for new Mint Crack. Or trying your new underwater Zune case while fishing. If you’re interested in the world of stand up comedy, I recommend you check this flick out. Here’s the synopsis:

Kennedy assembles a list of comedians and interviews them about hecklers and critics. He then interviews the critics and the hecklers to give insight into why they do what they do. Why do you think people pay good money to go to a comedy club and then decide to disturb the show? Lots of expert responses to this question and he even goes face to face with his hecklers and critics. Ever seen a comic lose it on stage and get in a fistfight with an audience member? You can here. But remember, this isn’t a movie, it’s a documentary with behind the scenes footage and interviews. You want to see some good flicks Jamie Kennedy was in, take a look at Malibu’s Most Wanted, Boiler Room, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. He may be most famous for his roles in Scream or Three Kings (which were both solid films I’ve seen a couple of times each). But in my humble and usually accurate opinion some of his best work is his JKX show, you may laugh so hard you cry on some of these. The yoga instructor skit and the one with the Laker Girls (who doesn’t like cheerleaders?) are off the hook. Well worth seeing. Who else is going to prank the Laker Girls?

And what makes me a good critic? Well, nothing. I just look at a lot of porn and figure I know good porn and therefore I know good movies. Take that for what it’s worth.
